HOW DO I....
OBTAIN A REPEAT PRESCRIPTION?

If your doctor agrees, you may obtain a repeat prescription without needing to be seen. Repeat prescriptions are in two parts: the green left-hand side is the prescription itself which you take to the pharmacy to get your medication. The white right-hand side is a list of your repeat medication, i.e. all the medication you have on a regular basis – you should keep this part to order your next supply of medication. This side sheet will notify you of how many more prescriptions you may order before next seeing the doctor. If it states “please see GP to order more” then make a routine appointment to review your medication in good time before you run out.

Please remember to allow at least two full working days, calculated from the next working day following your request (Monday – Friday, excluding Bank Holidays).

To request a repeat prescription, please tick clearly the items you require on the white right-hand side of your previous prescription and deposit it in the secure box in the front entrance foyer of the Health Centre or pop it through the Health Centre doors when closed. In order to avoid errors and for safety and security reasons we are unable to accept telephone requests for prescriptions. However, you may email your request. If you are housebound or unable to come to the Surgery you may post your request to the surgery, enclosing a stamped addressed envelope for its return. If you do use the post please remember to allow additional time.

We are unable to process any urgent request via email and for that you will need to call into the surgery in person during Help Desk hours (10am-12noon and 2.00pm – 4.00pm).

Local pharmacies in the West Wight also offer a service where you can leave your request slip with them and collect your medication from them without the need to come to the surgery. Please remember to allow additional time for this service. Further information about this service is available from your local pharmacies. Also, details of the Electronic Prescribing Service are shown below.

There are a number of ways that we can reduce unnecessary expenditure on medicines, thereby releasing money to spend on other NHS services. The GPs in this practice fully endorse the efforts of the Isle of Wight NHS Primary Care Trust to cut drug wastage and prescribing cost effectively. Many patients who require regular medication will have already received letters from a team of nurses and technicians working with the GPs. These letters may discuss changes to medication which will either produce a clinical benefit or provide greater cost effectiveness at no clinical detriment to the patient. We accept that occasionally these changes will not suit everyone and consequently request that you contact one of our Medicine Management Nurses using the telephone number on the letter if you are concerned, need further information or believe the change suggested is inappropriate for you.

THE ELECTRONIC PRESCRIBING SERVICE (EPS)

This is an NHS service, which gives you the chance to change how your gp sends your prescription to the pharmacy of your choice.

This service is right for you if you have a stable condition and you:

• Don't want to go to your GP practice everytime to collect your repeat prescription.

• Collect your medicines from the same place most of the time.

• Use a prescription collection service now.

This service is not right for you if you:

• Don't get prescriptions very often.

• Pick up your medicines from different places.

• Travel or work away from home a lot.

You need to choose a pharmacy to which your GP practice can send your prescription electronically. This is called nomination. Ask any pharmacy that offers EPS or your GP practice to add your nomination for you. You don't need a computer to do this.

For more information about EPS visit www.cfh.nhs.uk/eps
