CLINICS
Leg
Ulcer Clinic
The Leg Ulcer Clinic mainly specialises in
compression bandaging as a form of treatment for leg ulcers. It is run by the
district and practice nurses and is held weekly at the Health Centre. Initial
assessment is undertaken to determine whether this form of treatment is suitable
for individual patients.
Well Leg Clinic
The Well Leg Clinic aims to promote the ‘healthy
legs’ for those individuals who suffer from venous disease which may put
them at risk of developing leg ulcers. Follow-up care is also offered to those
individuals who have experienced leg ulcers in the past. It is a joint venture
between the district and practice nurses and is held weekly at the the Health
Centre.
Asthma
The
asthma clinic is open to all asthmatic patients. Your doctor may refer you, but
you are also able to refer yourself.
The aim of the clinic is to help diagnose
asthma, to educate patients about their asthma, to find the right medication to
control their asthma, to identify those patients with poor control of their asthma,
to help the patient self-manage their asthma and to improve the quality of life
of the asthmatic patient.
Chronic Obstructive
Lung Disease Clinic
If you have emphysema, chronic bronchitis
or chronic asthma, the clinic is run to help you manage your symptoms and to help
find the best treatment to help you cope with breathlessness, cough and wheeze.
We are able to do lung function testing to find out how much lung function has
been lost and then aim your treatment at that level, to help improve your quality
of life.
Diabetes
Most
diabetics are cared for by the practice. We hold weekly clinics for annual and
general reviews run by two of our GPs, one of whom has undertaken the Warwick
course in diabetes care. We hold a weekly clinic led by a diabetic nurse who assesses
results and advises on medication and insulin changes, diet and lifestyle. As
part of the annual review, an appointment will be made to see the podiatrist,
and a retinal screening appointment will be offered. This is currently undertaken
by GP/Ophthalmologist/Optician. Access is available to education, meters, peer
advisors and dietician. We have close links to the diabetic service at St. Mary's
Hospital and offer a combined service with some patients having shared care between
Brookside and the hospital. Patients are referred to the hospital service where
necessary.
No Smoking Clinic
This
is aimed at helping patients to give up smoking. Treatment, monitoring and
advice are available. Ask for details and an appointment at the desk.
Coronary
Heart Disease Clinic
There is a regular coronary heart
disease clinic held by a practice nurse on an appointment basis. This is for patients
already on the Heart Register because of problems such as angina, heart attack
or cardiac surgery. Risk factors are monitored, and lifestyle discussed.
Children's
Immunisation Clinic
A clinic is held on Wednesday afternoon
by appointment with practice nurses. Antenatal
and Postnatal Clinics
These are by appointment with your
own doctor or midwife.
Podiatry
NHS
podiatry is available for those with medical requirements by appointment only.
Physiotherapy
By
appointment with your own GP.
Family Planning
By arrangement with your own GP or at the weekly nurse-led “Drop-In”
Family Planning Clinic at Brookside, Wednesdays 5.00-6.00pm.
Minor
Operations and ECGs
Discuss these with your own doctor
for assessment.
Blood Pressure
High blood pressure can, in the long term, increase the risk of heart
attacks and strokes. Reducing blood pressure can reduce these risks. Treatment
does not always require tablets. All adults are advised to have their blood pressure
checked at least every five years. If you have not had yours checked recently,
please make an appointment for the Blood Pressure Clinic.
Cervical
Smears
The doctors recommend that all women between the
ages of 18 and 65 have a cervical smear test every three years, in order to prevent
cancer of the neck of the womb. This may be performed in the surgery by one of
the practice nurses. A routine letter explaining the options will be sent to you when you are due for
a smear.
Flu Vaccination
We recommend that anyone with heart or chest trouble or
diabetes, and everyone over the age of 65 should have a vaccination every Autumn
to prevent flu.
Watch for our posters in the surgery waiting rooms. Pneumococcal
vaccination helps prevent pneumonia in vulnerable groups and lasts for 10 years.
Travel Abroad
Our
practice nurses are available to offer medical advice regarding travel and vaccinations
where appropriate. Do plan ahead and make an appointment. Please note: Yellow
Fever immunisation has to be done at a designated centre.
Blood Tests
We offer a limited service to elderly and infirm patients, by appointment. Patients are encouraged to attend the Pathology Department at St. Mary's Hospital if possible, between 7.30am and 3.45pm except the first Wednesday of every month when the department will not open until 8.30am (staff training).
Smear results and blood test results may be given by phone Monday to Friday at Freshwater, or on request at Yarmouth. Please allow five working days for results of all tests.
